Member Profiles > John Schlitt

John Schlitt has served as lead vocalist for Petra since 1986, when he joined the band as the replacement for Greg X. Volz. With John Schlitt at the microphone, Petra has released thirteen official studio recordings, beginning with 1986's Back To The Street and concluding with 2003's Jekyll & Hyde.

Prior to joining Petra, Schlitt was the lead vocalist for the mainstream band Head East, whose 1975 hit song "Never Been Any Reason" remains in heavy rotation on secular classic rock radio stations. After completing six albums with Head East, John was released from the band in 1980. Within a few years, John became a Christian and fought off several personal issues before landing a job as an engineer in a mining construction company. In 1985, after having been absent from the music scene for five years, Schlitt received a phone call from Bob Hartman, Petra's founder and principal songwriter. By 1986, the "new" Petra - featuring John Schlitt at its helm - released Back To The Street, which paved the way for an all-new level of success and recognition for Petra. Since then, Petra has made a huge impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide through its music and ministry.

In addition to his well-documented work with Petra, John Schlitt has released two recordings as a solo arist - Shake (1995) and Unfit For Swine (1996). He has also been a featured guest on several releases, the most recent being Project Damage Control (2005). Though the future remains uncertain, John will most likely resume his solo career following the conclusion of Petra's ministry.
